The man said all aboard the Dixie Flagler; we're rollin out for all points headed south And I'll ride that train ’til the day I chase her down She's the finest thing I ever laid my eyes on; I never should’ve let her leave my side And there ain't no way I'm ever gonna change my mind She's everything a boy could ever wish for Everything a man could ever lack If there's one thing in this world I can rely on My Tennessee Rose ain't coming back I rode the line from Mobile up to Cairo, from Cincinnati down to New Orleans And I searched the road every wide place in between Now better men have rode this rail to ruin, and stronger men have startled at the bit But you'll never fail if you don't know when to quit CHO They told you bout the wildwood flower; she's prettier than anything in the holler And I been riding for 40 hours and 30 days and 20 minutes to find her But nothing round here looks the same; seems like they’ve changed every single name And the pretty girl I used to swing has got a brand new man and a wedding ring She's the only thing I wanna see, but she don't even give a damn for me CHO The train pulled out of Cottonwood this morning and left me standing there on Platform 9 And I know by now there's no one else to blame And the sun don't rise at the mention of her name After all these years the song still remains the same She's everything a boy could ever dream of But boyish dreams all someday fade to black If there's one thing in this world I can depend on My Tennessee Rose ain't coming back

Jesus used to be my friend Jesus used to be my friend But I fell out of favor with him Sad-eyed angel in my head Sad-eyed angel in my head She said I'll meet you when you are dead And everything I thought I knew That all changed when I lost you And everything I thought I'd found That all changed when Jesus let me down I spoke the words, I drank the wine I spoke the words, I drank the wine But it weren't enough to make you mine I said, ‘Jesus, don't you hear my plea? Jesus, don't you hear my plea?’ I guess he turned a deaf ear to me And everything I thought I knew That all changed when I lost you And everything I thought I'd found That all changed when Jesus let me down Jesus used to be my friend Jesus used to be my friend But I fell out of favor with him

I thought it would be easy to get on with my life I’d go out with my buddies, laugh and have a good time One more round of whiskey- man, we’ll paint the town But in the cold light of morning, oh, how the truth shines down You were the one I’d die for; I promised you my love I worked so hard to give you all that you deserved I said I’d never leave you; I can’t believe where I stand now But in the cold light of morning, oh, how the truth shines down I can’t believe it’s over I can’t believe you’re gone I can’t believe I hurt you I don’t know if I can move on I said I’d never leave you; I can’t believe where I stand now But in the cold light of morning, oh, how the truth shines down Darlin’, I know you had to go And I’ll pay the rest of my life for hurting you so Pride is a prison where no love can escape And now I see it in the cold light of day I said I’d never leave you; I can’t believe where I stand now But in the cold light of morning, oh, how the truth shines down Yeah, in the cold, cold light of morning, oh, how the truth shines down

Toe the Line 03:34
Toe the line, or get thee back Get thee behind me, devil black Throw my face down in the dust Don’t be surprised when I get up And I toe the line Get thee behind me, devil black Don’t waste no time Just toe the line Was it grace that brung me here, Or the devil’s face staring in my mirror? You could gather all the joy I’ve found If I could find a match, I’d burn it down And I toe the line Yeah, I don’t look back, devil black I toe the line I toe the line ‘Cos I toe the line I waste no time I toe the line I toe the line Toe the line, or get thee back Get thee behind me, devil black Preaching power but bringing death And I will fight you ’til my last breath Gonna toe the line I don’t look back, devil black I waste no time Gonna toe the line

How to Leave 02:58
You're famous in my life; everybody knows your name Though you been gone for such a long time, they know you're the one to blame For the bottle in my hand, the broken heart upon my sleeve But I can thank you for one thing, honey, I learned how to drink The night that you learned how to leave We was busted from the start; no, there was nothing we could do 'Cos I would never pledge my heart, and you never could be true But it's a funny thing how time will rearrange what you believe I think I either lost my mind or I finally learned to love The night that you learned how to leave Now there's a bottle in my hand, a broken heart upon my sleeve But I can thank you for one thing, honey, I learned how to drink The night I learnt you how to leave I mean I thank you for one thing, 'cos you taught me how to drink The night I taught you how to leave

I used to be a king I used to wear her ring But now I'm just a clown The circus has left town Oh, I've lost everything No hope without a dream A song without a tune No love left in this empty room I used to be a king Now I've lost everything SOLO Oh, I've lost everything No hope without a dream A song without a tune No love left in this empty room I used to be a king Now I've lost everything Oh, I've lost everything

Every night I cry 'Cos every day, I lie I said I won't go back, but then Every time, I ride again On the train of misery I ride the rails of memory Broken hearts and shattered dreams Are all I see Train of misery Every tear fuels the flame Of regrets that I can't change Promises I couldn't keep Crashed and burned us in the deep On the train of misery I ride the rails of memory Broken hearts and shattered dreams Are all I see Train of misery Misery loves company So won't you please come ride with me? Bittersweet is all I know So drink it down, and away we'll go On the train of misery I ride the rails of memory Broken hearts and shattered dreams Are all I see Train of misery

Get on down the road get on down the track Your true love left a hole and she ain't comin' back Get on down the road, get on down the line Don't care where we go, ‘cos anywhere is fine What you have will pass; what you love will end Watch out where you're goin'; don't worry where you been Get on down the road, get on down the line Don't care where we go, ‘cos anywhere is fine Maybe Lafayette, maybe San Antone Southeast Catahoula- everywhere is home Get on down the road, get on down the line Don't care where we go, ‘cos anywhere is fine Get on down the road get on down the track True love left a hole, and she ain't comin' back Get on down the road, get on down the line Don't care where we go, ‘cos anywhere is fine I don't care where we go, ‘cos anywhere, anywhere is fine

The Way Back 02:40
On the way back to what I used to be I met a young boy; he was just like me He had a wild heart and a racing mind Even the sunlight liked the way he shined And we talked all day, or was it just a minute? I knew either way, things would be different Sometimes the biggest change comes when you least expect it On the way back The way back On the way back, we'll both speak of home I'll tell him everything that I should have known How there ain't no healing what the heart yearns But some things you can't teach, and some things you can't learn And we'll talk all day, or maybe just a minute I know either way, things will be different Sometimes the change you need comes when you least expect it On the way back The way back On the way back to what I'm gonna be I wonder if I will recognize me

High Stakes 03:06
In between the earth and sky, not too low but not to high You're all alone in the unknown Don't look back and don't take stock; let it reel, let it rock Let it go; get in the zone When you're coming round the curve and start to lose your nerve Take a dare; don't be scared Stomp the pedal to the floor; give it just a little more You're almost there- You're almost there You don't understand the cards you're holding and your hand starts to shake High stakes You're feeling like a fool cos you're breaking every rule & it feels great High stakes When your feet are to the fire and the flames are rushing higher, It gets hot, but give it all you got And when they're tearing down your name, boy, don't be ashamed Get in the game; don't take the blame Heaven is so close, and hell is there for those who wait around So don't wait around You gotta stand up and fight; if you know it's right, Stand your ground; knock 'em down You don't understand the cards you're holding and your hand starts to shake High stakes You're feeling like a fool cos you're breaking every rule & it feels great High stakes

It's days like these a man can use a friend Everybody plays the loser now and then You can't pull up your weeds 'cos they've already gone to seed The damn things just grow right back again Sometimes you can't see the mountain 'cos you're on it Sometimes you bet a horse that's already run Sometimes you lose the track and it's too late to circle back Well there's nothing need doing because nothing can be done Ol’ Caesar was a gambler with the knack And he bet his life he'd end up in the black Good Roman friends and countrymen are quick to lend a hand Just watch it when they say they've got your back Sometimes you can't see the mountain 'cos you're on it Sometimes you bet a horse that's already run Sometimes you lose the track and it's too late to circle back Well there's nothing need doing because nothing can be done Now the good times never work out like they could And the bad times won't move on the way they should But as the world is round, all roads lead uphill and down And any path'll get you through the woods Sometimes you can't see the mountain 'cos you're on the mountain Sometimes you bet a horse that's already run Sometimes you lose the track and it's too late to circle back Well there's nothing need doing because nothing can be done

In the darkness, a burning sun It don't matter what you've done 'Cos I will find you I will find you Are you desperate, feeling unknown? Crying lonesome to no one at all? Are you lost, so far from home? In the darkness, a burning sun It don't matter what you've done 'Cos I will find you I will find you Are you lost, so far from home? In the darkness, a burning sun It don't matter what you've done 'Cos I will find you I will find you

Windfall 02:43
A wind blows cold; it's raining down in my soul All alone, stranded on Perdition Road 'Cos I didn't take the call I'm waiting for the windfall Waiting for the windfall Faith and hope will rise again Waiting for the windfall The good lord's hand's gonna guide me in When that good day comes around, I'll be waiting for the wind to send my savior down Heaven knows, sometimes the devil's been my friend Out on that road, I’m riding with dark angels once again 'Cos I didn't take the call I'm waiting for the windfall Waiting for the windfall Faith and hope will rise again Waiting for the windfall The good lord's hand's gonna guide me in When that good day comes around, I'll be waiting for the wind to send my savior down

In the early light of day sometimes I can still hear her say Please don't ride with the boys today But an outlaw never listens anyway It was a cold cowboy goodbye; I didn't have an alibi She said, The price on your head is high Wanted men don't come back alive Blue sky, sage and snow The piñon burning low Morning mission bell Emilia, farewell Farewell We had the drop on the Feds; they were all left for dead How could I've know it was my head My brothers would fill with lead? They saw the fear in my eyes as they laughed and let those bullets fly I fell face down in the night; they took the gold And left me there to die Blue sky, sage and snow The piñon burning low Morning mission bell Emilia, farewell Farewell Emilia, farewell Farewell

How's it goin’ these days with you? I hear you started your life brand new I'm OK; thanks for askin' There's just a few things I've been wondering I can't believe we left each other in the darkness before the dawn How's it goin’? Are you goin’, or are you gone? It's nice to see you one more time You look so lovely; wish you were mine It's been awhile now since we parted We should've finished what we started I can't believe we left each other in the darkness before the dawn How's it goin’? Are you goin’, or are you gone? We know the way we got off track Is there a way to make it back? We know the things that made us fight But do the wrongs outweigh the right? I can't believe we left each other in the darkness before the dawn How's it goin'? Are you goin’, or are you gone?

Cold Day 04:05
I thought I’d found my way After all I had to do was pray But it’s a cold day Every flower is dead Every daydream in my head Is bleeding red and dead Desert sky in my eye There’s a fading light falling through the night Like a broken dove, sick in love She’s all but gone this time It’s a cold day It was easy, looking back To let myself just lose track I only learn the hard way Desert skies in my eyes There’s a fading light falling through the night Like a broken dove, sick in love She’s all but gone this time It’s a cold day It’s a cold day in hell Every flower is dead Every daydream in my head Is bleeding red and dead It’s a cold day

about

Once upon a time in Nashville, Tenn., there were three young men who played in a band. They enjoyed themselves and accomplished many things before going their separate ways, each to seek his fortune in the Wide World. They vowed that one day they would again combine their talents and share what they had learned. Now, via the electrical power of the Information Super-Lonesome Highway, The Sawdust Brothers have been reunited.

"Tennessee Rose" is the debut album from these virtual purveyors of fine country music. Ryan Murphey is based in Nashville, Johnny Dowers in Los Angeles, and David E. Lane in Portland, OR. Thus the record comprises two years of long- and short-distance collaboration, with The Sawdust Brothers writing the songs and performing and recording all the instruments themselves. The album was then mixed in Nashville by Grammy-winning engineer Keith Compton (whose credits include Emmylou Harris & Roy Orbison).
